Lesson Structure

Lessons are structured according to your own needs and goals, but most are broken up into 3 parts of varying lengths: Technique, Repertoire, and Theory.

1. Technique encompasses how to use your body and vocal instrument to achieve your performance and/or recording goals. This is done through a series of physical, mental, vocal, and breathing exercises, all of which have a specific purpose. With practice, these exercises can be extremely effective very quickly, not to mention FUN!

2. Repertoire is a fancy word for the actual material you are working on and the musical style(s) you most want to explore (classical, pop, jazz, rock, R&B, etc.). Generally we will work on 2 pieces at a time: one student-choice and one teacher-choice, unless you are preparing for a specific show or recording project. Occasionally exploring styles OUTSIDE of your comfort zone is an excellent way to expand your vocal and artistic horizons!

3. Theory covers not only the structure of music, but the application of that knowledge towards the following: sight-reading; key transposition; chart-writing (jazz); and learning to accompany yourself on piano and/or guitar. These skills make you a more well-rounded musician and give you the ability to communicate better with your fellow musicians. This portion of your lessons can be as basic or as intensive as you choose, based on your individual goals.
